Jumping, barking and door manners

Calm at the door. Calm with guests.

Jumping on guests, bolting through doors, barking at the window, demand barking for attention. These are the everyday behaviors that make a house feel chaotic, and they respond quickly to structure.

Sound familiar?

  • The doorbell sets off a frenzy
  • Guests are jumped on, knocked, licked, or avoided altogether
  • Barks at every dog, person or delivery outside the window
  • Bolts out open doors or gates
  • Barks or paws at you for attention and food

What’s really going on

Jumping and barking are self-rewarding: they get attention, get the dog to the door, get the delivery driver to leave. Without a clear alternative and a consistent rule, the dog has no reason to stop.

They are also symptoms of a dog with no off switch: no place to go, no duration, no impulse control.

How Seth handles it

The approach.

1

Door boundaries are taught in every program: the dog waits at thresholds until released, at the front door, the car, the crate. Place command gives the dog somewhere to be when guests arrive and something to do instead of jumping.

2

Impulse control and duration are built daily in Seth’s home, where doors open, people come and go and life happens. That is why in-home training transfers to your home better than a facility.

3

You are shown how to run the greeting, the doorbell and the window in the go-home session, so the calm holds in your house.

Questions

About jumping and barking.

Which program stops jumping and barking?

Gold (2 weeks) is the usual recommendation: it targets jumping, door boundaries, place and impulse control directly. If the barking is reactive toward dogs or strangers, Platinum adds the behavior modification piece.

Can I fix this with private lessons instead?

Often, yes. Private lessons at the facility or in your home are a good fit for door manners and jumping when you have the time to practice daily between sessions.
